North West Cancer Research Charity Walk
Ian Gibson co. director of Artisan Windows is doing a coast to coast walk from St. Bees Head to Robin Hood Bay 196miles to raise money for the North West Cancer Research fund.
Thanks for taking the time to have a look at our planned walk.
Having been diagnosed with bowel cancer some 4 years ago, I am only too aware of the need for cancer research. I am one of the many who have benefited from the research that has taken place in the past and am truly thankful to be in a position to take on this challenge.
When I was ill I dreamed about doing a long distance walk and talked about it with my friend, Peter Dutton, who had suffered testicular cancer some years earlier. But, as is often the case, when I recovered and got back into work, plans were 'put on the back burner' and there never seemed to be quite enough time.
Sadly last November, Peter's sister-in-law, Judith Jones, who was also my friend, lost her brave battle against ovarian cancer at the age of 45. This was two months after another friend, Steve Lucas, died from pancreatic cancer aged 48. How did I ever even think that there was 'never enough time'?
Judith was a committee member of the Mold branch of North West Cancer Research and was committed to raising awareness of all forms of cancer. 2012 is not only the Queen's Diamond Jubilee year, it also marks the 60th anniversary of the Mold branch of NWCR and to celebrate this milestone they are hoping to raise £60,000 via various charity events. With this in mind Peter and I, together with Judith's husband Wyn, will be walking the 'Coast to Coast' route and are more determined than ever to raise as much sponsorship as possible in Judith's memory
We are aiming to start walking the 196 miles from St. Bees Head in Cumbria on Saturday 5th of May, across the north of England, to complete at Robin Hood Bay on the east coast some 14 days later on Saturday 19th May.
It is our hope that we will be joined by friends and well wishers for parts of our journey. Maybe for 1 , 2 or even the full 14 days !! ..... the more the merrier !!...... all we ask if you would like to join us, is that you organise your own sponsorship or give a good donation so we can raise as much money as possible to go towards our £60,000 target. As with life, it is our intention to enjoy the walk and have fun on the way.
On route we will be staying in B&Bs and local pubs, our schedule is written below so anybody wishing to take part can arrange their own B&Bs, transport etc. If you are interested in joining us please contact me by email ian@artisanwindows.co.uk
I must stress at this point that we, or anybody who joins us, will be funding it our/themselves, ALL the sponsorship money will be going to the NWCR. At least 90p from every pound raised goes directly to research centres at Bangor and Liverpool.
If you can't come along, please visit our web page www.justgiving.com/ian-gibson6 and sponsor us.
Please please please give as generously as you can.... I know over the last few years I have been a pain in the back side asking people to help raise and donate money, mainly for the colorectal unit in Bodelwydden, but cancer research is, surprisingly, 100% dependent on private funding and sponsorship such as this,
I thank every one of you for your ongoing support,
